Take a DOG on a DATE!
Bay Area and Sacramento Areas of CA*
Love dogs but can't have one? Want to help a rescue but do not know how? Need community service hours for school or work?
Take one of our adoptable dogs on a DATE!
You fill out our volunteer application (for the safety of the dogs involved -- we hope you understand) and we will set you up over email with the foster parents who are closest to you. You find a mutually agreeable time and place to meet and decide how long you will take the dog out.
Dogs must remain on leash and with their collar/tags at all times. Some will also have "adopt me" vests to wear. We will send you with business cards that you can hand out to anyone who shows interest. They can go to any dog-friendly places that are ON LEASH (no dogparks).
Ideas:
Coffee Shop Patio for a Puppacino
Restaurant with Dog-Friendly Patio
Pet Supply Store to pick out a treat/toy
Hike
Point Isabel for an on-leash walk
Local Dog-Friendly Street Events
Hang out at your house and bake dog-friendly treats
Or create your own adventure
What we would like from you -- photos, videos and narrative of what you learned about your date while you were out. This helps us with finding them the right home and give us fun things to post about them.
To schedule a dog for a date, please fill out our online volunteer application below (one per household) and designate you are interested in doggy dates on the form. Please ensure that you at least put what city you live in (or are willing to drive to) so that we know which of our foster home/s to connect you to.

Internships
We
have a need for student interns every semester and we accept applications
year-round for these positions. They are unpaid, but can count for school
credit, resume building and/or volunteer hours - the expectation is 5-20 hours
per week. Almost any of our volunteer
positions listed below can be turned into an internship. We expect at least one semester (3-4 months
commitment).
These are designed for college students, but we will accept people trying to re-enter the workforce, gain experience in this field and high school students if they are highly motivated and capable of the duties. All interns need to be able to easily work without direct supervision and be self-motivated and want to really help us make a difference.
We would also be thrilled for Eagle Scout and/or 4-H projects
Please send an email to beourpet@gmail.com with the title of the SPECIFIC internship you would like to apply for, your experience, interest, goals, related talents (and/or a cover letter/resume), available hours, and term requested (Spring 2020, etc).
Volunteer Needs
All of our volunteer positions qualify towards community service hours for school or resume. For court-ordered community service, we provide different opportunities so please email for options.
We do not require you to be available constantly but we don’t want to have to beg you to participate either. You will be added to our volunteer FB group and can RSVP when you are available as well as respond to text messages as needed. Just because something happens 2-3 times a month, does not mean we need you available all of those times. It’s more of a “Anyone available on Thursday at noon to help me intake some new dogs?”
FOSTER VOLUNTEERS – take an animal into your home and ‘babysit’ it until it finds a new home. Being able to bring to weekend adoption events (usually twice a month) is preferred. Must be able to bring to adoption appointments outside of events at mutually agreeable times. We cover ALL costs and provide ALL supplies. We work with you to find the size/type animal that fits best in your home. This DIRECTLY saves lives as we only save the number of animals that we have foster homes to send them to.
EVENT VOLUNTEERS – Duties include transport of animals and supplies to/from events (mostly on weekends and usually within 20 miles of our office in 94565). Set up/take down at events. Handle animals during events. Talk to potential adopters at events. Alert us of supplies in need of replacing.
INTAKE VOLUNTEERS – help at our office during the intake of new animals (usually on weekdays around noon 2-3 times a month but you do not need to be available for all). Help hold animals for photos, make nametags and get medications ready, set up kennels and assist with other duties when we receive new animals.
PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY volunteers – can come as available to intake (times are weekdays around noon, 2-3 times a month -- 94565) or events (times are weekends 10-2 several times a month in Martinez, Pleasant Hill and sometimes other places) OR work directly with foster homes (various locations) to get photos and/or videos of our animals for us to use to market them to find homes.
TRANSPORT VOLUNTEERS – you and your car and a mutually agreeable time. We need people to drive animals and supplies here and there. Sometimes it is shelter pick ups, sometimes foster home deliveries, sometimes airport deliveries or pickups of animals who are flying to/from us or going to/from other rescues. It can be in-town or to Sacramento or Tahoe. We pay for any gas and tolls if desired/needed.
VIRTUAL VOLUNTEERS – you help with online tasks that you choose at times that you pick. These include but are not limited to: Social media management (we have many IG accounts for our special needs animals that could use admins), creating memes from pictures, creating videos of our available animals, sharing our pets with special needs to other accounts with similar themes, reaching out to media with press releases of special needs animals and coming up with your own projects that help market our animals.
FACILITY VOLUNTEERS – assisting our VP with anything that needs done in our office which includes cleaning, organizing, helping arrange donations of unneeded items to other rescues and administrative work that helps keep the rescue running – this is usually on weekdays and some weekends at mutually agreeable times.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS – pick one of our special programs (next tab) and help us market our animals in that space (mostly online but you can choose in-person or phone if you would like). This is on your own time although you are always welcomed in person.
GRAPHIC DESIGN – we need people who can draw/design caricatures of our longer-term animals to help us with marketing, help us design banners, graphics, t-shirts etc. This is on your own time.
ETSY – we would like to get an Etsy store up and running to generate some income for our medical fund. We need someone to take this on as far as set up and management goes. We will pay all costs. This is on your own time.
VIDEO – we have a LOT of cool ideas for videos that we want to have made to bring awareness to our cause and have hit so many dead ends with trying to find someone to help. We hope that a student will take us on as a project for their portfolio and help us create some really cute videos (that will maybe go viral)!
GRANTS - Identify possible grant opportunities (mostly online) for which UOH qualifies. Collecting all needed information for the application process for these grants and doing the legwork and "busy-work" involved in getting grants ready for submission. We are open to your proposals.
TEEN/PRETEEN COORDINATOR – we allow teen and pre-teen volunteers but need someone to take this on as coordinator before we can have a robust program. We have ideas but are also willing to allow you to make it your own.
CREATIVE – great for senior groups or girl scout projects – we need help making our Herbal Hug collars (and other projects as well) and will supply the instruction and the materials if you have a group who will help assemble them. Sewing experience (and machine) a HUGE plus but not necessary.
LAUNDRY – we have 1-2 loads of laundry that need to be done in between events. Pickup and drop off at our office in 94565. Do on your own time. Laundry is not disgusting – at worse has some doggy pee.
EMBROIDERY or CRICUT – we like to promote our longer term animals in the hopes of getting them homes and if you are able to donate these services to brand our animals supplies, we could most certainly use your help.
Umbrella of Hope (UOH) actively seeks to recruit volunteers without regard to race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or physical handicap. UOH also reserves the right to temporarily or permanently deny entry to the volunteer program.
This form is intended for you to tell us more about your interests so that we may correctly determine which volunteer or internship area you would most benefit in. It is our goal that volunteers and interns gain valuable and meaningful experiences while being in our organization.
